When little boys dance they take you back to other worlds

September 11, 1984

When Luke comes up a moth is fluttering: white wings, white thorax and on the underside fine red hieroglyphs - there's a pharaoh in his household, a host of these pure moths. Luke, at twelve, forgets himself and breakdances with his hands. He's put a record on and the way he moves looks new but I see the boy has a way back to old worlds. My nephew Oliver, a boy afraid of motorcycles & snakes, visits before Hawaii. Oliver likes pineapple, mango - and when he hears of Kona's striped & purple fish he starts swimming in the air. Smooth, like a Polynesian hula. Fruit & fish - his sweet hands gathering and hunting. The charm. Little boy springing back.
