Appeal for aid for Philippines goes out as typhoon toll rises

The death toll rose to more than 660 people Wednesday in the worst typhoon in modern Philippine history. The Office of Civil Defense said 421 other people were missing and feared dead, while 341 others were injured. A total of 1.19 million Filipinos have been left homeless from two typhoons that hit the Philippines just days apart.

The International Red Cross launched a global appeal for $1 million in emergency aid. The United Nations Disaster Relief Organization, the French branch of the World Assistance Corps, and the Islamic Conference also offered aid.
