China admitted to Interpol, taking the place of Taiwan

China this week became a member of the Paris-based International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). American officials had pushed for a compromise formula that would have permitted Taiwan to retain its membership in Interpol even as China joined. But Peking laid down tough conditions under which Taiwan representatives could have remained only as nonvoting members of China's delegation. This was unacceptable to Taiwan.
