Mondale would call for halt on nuclear, 'star wars' tests

Walter Mondale promised to call on the Soviet Union to accept an immediate halt in the testing of all nuclear and space weapons if he is elected president in November.

Speaking to the American Legion Convention here, Mr. Mondale said he would use this ''temporary mutual pause'' in an effort to bring the Soviets back to the bargaining table and halt the nuclear arms race.

David Aaron, Mondale's adviser on national security, said the US would be willing to halt testing unilaterally for as long as six months to gauge the Soviets' interest in reaching an agreement.
