Teachers join strike lines in Pennsylvania, Michigan

Tuesday as the number of striking educators in seven states reached more than 7, 200, disrupting education for more than 111,000 students. Chicago's 24,700 instructors agreed to open classes under an expired contract yesterday, and officials in San Francisco attempted to head off a strike by that city's 3,800 teachers that could begin today, the start of the school year there.

Illinois was hardest hit by the walkouts, with more than 3,200 teachers on strike in eight districts. Other strikes continued in Louisiana, Indiana, Washington, and Rhode Island.
