Punjab politicians and clergy detained to avert Sikh meeting

Indian security forces rounded up about 450 politicians and religious officials in northern Punjab State to thwart a world convention of Sikhs, the Press Trust of India said Wednesday.

They were detained at meetings called to muster support for Sunday's convention, which the government banned because of concern over law and order in the state, the scene of much violence in recent months.
