Chinese, Romanian seek halt on medium-range missiles

Presidents Li Xiannian of China and Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania have called jointly on the United States and the Soviet Union to halt deployment of medium-range nuclear missiles. They urged the resumption of superpower talks on nuclear weapons and the signing of an agreement reducing such arms and eventually leading to their eradication.

In a speech Monday night during a state visit to Bucharest, Romania, Mr. Li also praised Romania's maverick style of foreign policy within the Warsaw Pact and said communist states should have the right to choose their own independent paths.
