Women Jaycees

It's about time. The United States Jaycees have agreed to let women become members. It may have taken a little court suasion to provide the impetus: Last month the US Supreme Court ruled that the Jaycees' failure to admit women in Minnesota violated that state's law that prohibits discrimination in places of public employment. A number of other states have similar laws, which potentially would have opened other Jaycees groups to court suit.

No matter. What counts is that the Jaycees vote opens one more door to women, in this case to young women who wish to join the civic organization, whose membership is largely of people in early stages of business careers.

Women long have pointed out that progress in professions is aided immensely by participation in such profession-related groups, as well as by their performance on the job.
