Protest in southern India charges US is anti-Tamil

About 1,000 students stoned the US Consulate here Monday during a march staged to protest a Sri Lankan Army campaign against Tamil separatists. The students chanted slogans accusing the United States of backing the Sri Lankan government in what they said was a campaign to crush Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Army troops had set fire Sunday to the Tamil-dominated town of Mannar in retaliation for a guerrilla ambush of a military convoy. More than 3,000 families lost their homes.
