Shamir calls for stiff terms for serving under Peres

Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir agreed ''in principle'' Monday to serve under opposition Labor Party leader Shimon Peres in a national unity government, but he would demand major concessions - including top Cabinet posts for his bloc - in return for joining a Peres-led government. The two leaders planned to meet late yesterday in their first one-on-one talk since the inconclusive July 23 elections. On Sunday, President Chaim Herzog, who under Israeli law decides who has the best chance of forming Israel's next government, gave Mr. Peres the nod.
