Immigration reform bill appears defeated for now

Senate leaders said Wednesday they will not accept the House version of a White House-backed revision in the immigration law, apparently derailing chances for passage of the so-called Simpson-Mazzoli bill this year. Instead, its sponsors are expected to reintroduce their proposal in early 1985.

The bill, opposed by Hispanic groups and Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale, would grant amnesty to many aliens already in this country while imposing stiff new penalties on employers who hire foreign workers.
