and Reagan airs terms for lifting trade sanctions

President Reagan said Tuesday night he will ease sanctions against Poland if the amnesty for political prisoners there meets conditions set down by the United States. These were the ending of martial law, the freeing of all political prisoners, and a new dialogue by the government with the Roman Catholic church and the Solidarity free labor movement.

The sanctions most likely to be lifted are the ban on regularly scheduled commercial flights to the United States by LOT, the Polish airline, and curbs on American-financed scientific exchanges with Poland.

More significant are the US refusal to support Poland's admission to the International Monetary Fund, the withholding of most-favored nation trade privileges, and a ban on US credits for the purchase of food and other commodities.
