Manila demonstrators protest Marcos plan for austerity

Police clashewith 20,000 demonstrators Monday, as President Ferdinand Marcos outlined economic austerity measures at the opening of the new National Assembly. A major bank closed to block a run on deposits.

Mr. Marcos appealed to the opposition to join in trying to overcome the country's present difficulties and not to support subversion and terrorism as a show of spite against him.
