Argentines break off talks with Britain on Falklands

Foreign Minister Dante Caputo said his government broke off talks with Britain Thursday over the Falkland Islands because the British refused to discuss Argentina's claim to the disputed territory.

Mr. Caputo told reporters here that Argentine officials walked out of the second day of talks in Bern after British representatives refused to discuss the question of sovereignty.

The meeting, sponsored by the Swiss government, which represents British interests in Argentina, was the first direct negotiations between the two countries since they went to war over the islanders in 1982.
