Duarte, on European swing, wins aid pledge from Bonn

West Germany pledged Monday to aid the US-backed Salvadorean government of President Jose Napoleon Duarte and repeated its support for a negotiated settlement to fighting in Central America.

Mr. Duarte arrived here on the first stop of a 10-day tour of three European countries to request more aid for his embattled nation. His visit comes the week after West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said in Mexico City that his government was prepared to provide more social and financial aid to El Salvador as a way of bringing peace to that country.
