West and East Germany agree to set up airline link

West Germany's national airline Lufthansa and East German carrier Interflug have agreed to operate scheduled flights between the two nations for the first time, Lufthansa said Tuesday.

Services will initially operate during trade fairs, starting Aug. 30, with a daily return flight from Frankfurt, West Germany, to Leipzig, East Germany, for the two-week fall fair there, Lufthansa said in a statement.

The agreement comes at a time of improving ties between Bonn and East Berlin. East German leader Erich Honecker is expected to visit West Germany in the fall.
