Shultz: 'KKK' threats at Olympics may be phony
US Secretary of State George Shultz said Tuesday he is inclined to believe that purported Ku Klux Klan racial threats against Malaysian and other Olympic teams were a disinformation campaign. He refused to say whether he meant a Soviet disinformation campaign.
On Monday, Sri Lanka's Olympic Committee said its athletes in Los Angeles had been threatened with death by a group claiming to be the Ku Klux Klan. An official of the Sri Lankan committee said the threat was contained in a letter received in Colombo Saturday which had a Virginia postmark. The letter said medals at the games were for whites and ''not for black and yellow apes.''
Similar letters were received last week by the Malaysia and South Korean Olympic Committees.
