Greece, rapping US, hints cutback at military bases

Greece's Socialist government claimed Monday that the United States was trying to interfere in Greece's internal affairs, hinting operations might have to be curtailed at American military bases in the country.

The statement was one of the strongest attacks on the United States by Premier Andreas Papandreou's 33-month-old government. In the statement, government spokesman Dimitri Maroudas said the United States was granting too much military aid to Turkey, ''thus boosting the threat against Greece and Cyprus.''

Political observers say Greek-American relations began to sour after Mr. Papandreou told a congress of his ruling Socialist Party in May that the ''United States is the expansionist mecca of imperialism.''
