Stuttgart-area workers vote to end long strike

Engineering workers in the key industrial area of Stuttgart have voted to end a seven-week-old strike that brought the West German auto industry almost to a halt, an IG Metall union spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman said nearly 55 percent of those polled, more than twice as many as needed to ensure a return to work, had voted in favor of a settlement proposed last week by a special arbitration commission and would return to their jobs today.
