Fire destroys movie stage used for James Bond films

A fire started by an explosion at Pinewood Studios destroyed a $2.7 million set for the science-fiction movie ''Legend,'' studio officials reported Wednesday. The cause of the explosion was not known.

The stage, said to be the world's largest, was built in 1976 for ''The Spy Who Loved Me'' and was used to shoot four James Bond movies and the Superman films.

''Legend'' had only 11 more days of filming left. The studio said it would be finished elsewhere at Pinewood, as will the next James Bond film, ''A View to a Kill,'' slated to begin filming there in August or September.
