Golden Temple priests call for day of mourning

High priests at the Golden Temple, who are seeking the withdrawal of troops from the shrine, Sunday called on Sikhs at home and abroad to observe a day of mourning on July 15.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi flew to this Sikh holy city and toured the Golden Temple, which she had ordered the Army to storm on June 4.

During her visit, the temple's high priest submitted a petition to Mrs. Gandhi asking that all troops be withdrawn from the complex and that pilgrims be allowed to visit the temple, the Sikhs' holiest shrine, United News of India reported.

Indian authorities reopened all but two Sikh temples Friday and relaxed travel and curfew restrictions in the Punjab state.
