Pope concludes Swiss visit on a serious tone

Pope John Paul II ended a six-day Swiss visit Sunday. It was the first pastoral visit the head of the Roman Catholic Church has made to Switzerland since the Reformation.

The Pope's trip was marked by a serious tone and relatively little enthusiasm among the Swiss. Vatican sources said part of his mission was to stress the pre-eminence of spiritual and moral values over materialism in a country that enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world.
