Mondale says US is ready for woman vice-president

Walter Mondale, starting a week of interviewing prospective running mates, said Saturday the American people are ready to accept a woman as vice-president. ''The people are ahead of the politicians,'' he said.

Standing beside him at a press conference near his home here was New York Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, chairwoman of the Democratic Party's platform committee, who has been regarded as one of the strong woman prospects to be Mondale's running mate against the Republican Reagan-Bush ticket in November.

On Friday, Mrs. Ferraro named the 15-member Democratic Platform Committee. It consists of of eight Mondale delegates, five delegates for Gary Hart, and two delegates for the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
