Argentina spurns austerity despite loss of US funds

Argentina stood firm Saturday on its refusal to accept austerity as a condition for the refinancing of its foreign debt despite the withdrawal of a $ 300 million US loan guarantee, officials here said.

The United States decided Friday not to renew the loan commitment to Argentina until the heavily indebted South American country can agree with the International Monetary Fund on economic reforms.
