Martina, Lendl French Open victors

June 12, 1984

A controversial Grand Slam and one of the all-time comebacks make this year's French Open a tough tennis act for even Wimbledon and the US Open to follow. Martina Navratilova routed Chris Evert Lloyd 6-3, 6-1 to win her fourth major championship in a row - a feat now recognized as a Grand Slam despite some dissent because they weren't all in the same calendar year.

Ivan Lendl defeated John McEnroe 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 for the men's title and his first victory in any Grand Slam event. He had been a finalist in four previous majors (two US Opens, one French, and one Australian).
