Nicaraguan rebel leader survives bomb explosion

A bomb intended for Nicaraguan rebel leader Eden Pastora exploded during a news conference at his jungle headquarters, killing an American journalist and four other people. Mr. Pastora was hospitalized for wounds.

The explosion, which Red Cross officials in Costa Rica said injured at least 28 people and killed five, occurred Wednesday night about one mile from the Costa Rican border. Pastora's guerrilla forces have been fighting in the region against troops of Nicaragua's leftist Sandinista government.

Among those killed was Linda Frazier, a reporter for the Tico Times newspaper in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Red Cross said.
