New group plans to spur cleanup of US toxic dumps

A business-environmental coalition announced Thursday the creation of ''Clean Sites Inc.,'' which will launch an unprecedented effort to accelerate cleanup of thousands of the nation's toxic waste dumps. The group will augment the federal ''Superfund'' program.

The chairman of Clean Sites will be one of the nation's best-known conservation leaders, Russell Train. Mr. Train is president of the World Wildlife Fund-US and a former Environmental Protection Agency administrator. The EPA, which must work closely with Clean Sites if it is to succeed, is giving its blessing to the project.
