Uruguayans demonstrate against military rulers

More than 50,000 demonstrators have taken part in what its organizers said was the biggest public protest ever held against Uruguay's military rulers. Demonstrations were held here and in other towns and cities.

People took to the streets Sunday banging pots and pans, honking car horns and chanting slogans demanding free elections, political amnesty, full employment, and press freedom.

The military, which has held power for 10 years, has pledged to return Uruguay to democracy by March, 1985. But a dialogue between the government and politicians is deadlocked over the armed forces' demands that the military be allowed to retain some power under an elected government.
