Unexpected winner in US Olympic marathon

Unheralded Peter Pfitzinger, running what he termed ''the race of my life,'' won the US Olympic Men's Marathon Trial Saturday in a time of two hours, 11 minutes, 43 seconds.

Mr. Pfitzinger, of West Newton, Mass., edged out Alberto Salazar by a mere 10 th of a second. John Tuttle, a local favorite from nearby Alfred, N.Y., finished third in 2:11.50. The top three finishers in the race qualified for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
