Salvadorean loser seeks to nullify Duarte victory

Ultra-rightist Roberto d'Aubuisson, the loser in the May 6 presidential election, filed a challenge late Monday night to nullify the victory of moderate Jose Napoleon Duarte.

Armando Calderon Sol, a lawyer with Mr. d'Aubuisson's ARENA party, said the petition was filed because of ''the grave irregular-ities committed by the Central Election Council and also for the council's serious violations of the political constitution.'' He did not specify.

The protest was lodged with provisional Vice-President Mauricio Gutierrez Castro. The challenge was aimed at the Central Elections Council, which declared Mr. Duarte, a moderate Christian Democrat, the winner Friday.
