Joan Benoit places first in Olympics marathon trial

Joan Benoit won a first-place finish Saturday in the first US Olympic women's marathon trials, outrunning more than 200 of America's best women marathoners. The race, in which Benoit finished in 2:31.04, came just 17 days after she underwent knee surgery.

Julie Brown and Julie Isphording took second and third and will join Benoit in representing the United States in the first women's marathon in Olympic history in the 1984 Games in Los Angeles in August.
