Weinberger says Soviets can fight war on two fronts

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger told Japanese leaders Friday that the Soviet Union was strong enough to fight a war in Asia and in Europe at the same time, a government spokesman reported.

Weinberger, paying a one-day visit to Japan, was speaking during a two-hour meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Yuko Kurihara, the spokesman said.

Addressing the Japanese Foreign Correspondents Club, Weinberger said all Western allies - the United States, NATO, Japan, and South Korea - must do more to counter what he described as an unflagging Soviet buildup.

''I just hope there will be enough years ahead for all of us to do the things we ought to do,'' he said.
