UN Security Council votes against Turkish-Cypriots

The United Nations Security Council, convened at the request of the Greek-Cypriots, adopted a resolution Friday condemning the Turkish-Cypriots for seceding from Cyprus. The action slaps the Turkish-Cypriots on the wrist, but ''lets them get off cheaply,'' according to analysts here.

The resolution was adopted by a 13-to-1 vote (Pakistan's being the negative vote), reports Monitor contributor Louis Wiznitzer. The United States abstained.

Turkey and Turkish-Cypriots immediately rejected the resolution.

The resolution asks the Turkish-Cypriots to go back on their Unilateral Declaration of Independence. It asks UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar to renew his efforts to get the two sides back to the negotiating table. It makes no reference to Chapter 7 of the UN Charter (covering threats to the peace and acts of aggression) or to sanctions.
