Pentagon reluctantly lists $13 billion in budget cuts

The Pentagon bowed to the twin pressures of Congress and the deficit Thursday , as Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger reluctantly handed Congress $13.9 billion in recommended cuts from the administration's proposed military budget for the coming year.

The cuts would damage the Reagan administration's plans to rebuild US arms strength, Mr. Weinberger said.

The recommendation would trim production of nine major weapons but leave the nuclear arms buildup intact. Weinberger proposed no cuts for the MX missile, the B-1 bomber, or research on a futuristic defense system against nuclear weapons.
