Long Island town expected to lift ban on Soviet envoys

The new mayor of this Long Island community said Tuesday he will urge that the town council here end a two-year-old ban on use of its golf course, beaches, and tennis courts by Soviet diplomats who once were denounced as spies.

Mayor Vincent Suozzi said he made the decision after having lunch March 31 with Oleg Troyanovsky, Soviet ambassador to the United Nations, and his wife, Tatyana, at the Soviet retreat on a 36-acre estate known as Killenworth.

The seven-member town council, some of whom also attended the informal gathering, is expected to approve Mr. Suozzi's recommendation in a vote scheduled for April 24.
