Sri Lanka tallies fatalities in latest strife with Tamils

Sri Lankan government officials said Wednesday that more than 50 people had been killed in the past week in the latest unrest among the Tamil minority. Unofficial estimates, however, put the death toll at more than 200.

In Colombo, President Junius Jayewardene extended for the 12th consecutive month the nationwide state of emergency in response to the renewed violence.
