Mozambique capital reels during long power outage

The 1 million people of Mozambique's capital, Maputo, struggled through the fifth day of a power blackout Tuesday that spoiled scarce food and darkened most homes, a report received here said.

The guerrillas of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) claimed responsibility for the strike against the pivotal Moamba power station April 5. They threatened their next target would be the city's waterworks and continued strikes against Maputo's road and rail links to the rest of the country.

Renamo demands the creation of a multiparty system and elections, a market economy, and ''respect for the traditional values'' of Mozambique's African society.
