Young Soviet wins right to seek world chess title

Soviet grandmaster Gary Kasparov won the right Monday to go for the world chess title by beating Vasily Smyslov in their championship eliminator match. The two agreed to a draw in their 13th game of the 16-game series, giving Kasparov the extra half point he needed to win the entire contest.

The final score left Kasparov, a 20-year-old Azerbaijani, with 8.5 points and Smyslov with 4.5.
