Army told to reinstate self-declared lesbian

US Magistrate D. Brock Hornby ordered the Army Tuesday to reinstate Diane Matthews, who was dismissed from the Army's Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1981 after telling an officer she was a lesbian.

Justice Hornby ruled that her dismissal merely for proclaiming herself a lesbian violated her constitutional rights.

The Army will study the decision, a spokesman said, but has not yet decided whether it will appeal the federal court ruling.
