Punjabi outbreak results in killings by Indian police

Police shot and killed 10 people and wounded up to 50 during riots Tuesday at the Sikh holy city of Amritsar after the assassination of a government parliamentarian set off widespread unrest in India's Punjab State.

A police spokesman in Amritsar said the situation had been brought under control by dusk.

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi called an emergency Cabinet meeting and opposition politicians walked out of Parliament amid unprecedented uproar over her handling of the sharply deteriorating Punjab crisis.

Five Punjab towns were under curfew and police made hundreds of arrests in Punjab and neighboring states to head off protests expected today during a strike called by right-wing Hindu groups.
