Flamingo wings

March 29, 1984

At first she was the fairy princess in the play; later, her classmates chose her queen. She was the gold ring I had caught on the carousel; when I looked at her I saw turquoise, silk fringe, Jordan almonds in a heart-shaped box, flamingo wings. I forgot Jordan almonds have a resistant core; turquoise, though a lovely blue, cannot be molded to a shape; silk fringe can twist of knot. I forgot flamingo wings could fly away. She left, like many migratory birds, and found her nesting ground in the far North - a predatory land, where fairy princesses do not survive, but queens become resilient, strong and sure.
