Canada, 9 other nations pledge acid-rain reduction

Canada and nine West European countries formally committed themselves Wednesday to a 30 percent reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions by 1993 to combat acid rain. They urged other nations, notably Britain and the United States, to join them.

The issue has become the major irritant in Canadian-US relations and now the Europeans, faced with severe damage to forests and lakes in West Germany and Scandinavia, are eager for international cooperation.
