Salvadorean rebels vow to block Pan Am Highway

Leftist rebels increased their operations this weekend as nationwide elections approached, blocking El Salvador's main highway two days in a row and vowing to halt traffic this week.

Insurgents who blocked the Pan American Highway for the second consecutive day Sunday robbed travelers of their national identification booklets, needed to vote in next Sunday's presidential election.

The guerrillas have waged a four-year battle to oust the US-supported Salvadorean government.
