Greenland controversy precipitates elections

A controversy over Greenland's withdrawal from the European Community has resulted in a call for elections on June 6. Several members of Parliament would have prefered an earlier election date, writes Monitor contributor Lars Toft Rasmussen, but it takes time to distribute the ballot papers to the little communities along Greenland's vast and frigid coast, some of them accessible only by dog sled.

Greenland and the EC have agreed to terminate Greenland's membership in the EC as of January 1, 1985. The EC will pay Greenland $23 million a year for five years in return for fishing rights in Greenland's waters.
