Number of recalled autos stripled last year

Recalls of domestic and foreign autos jumped in 1983 to 6.1 million vehicles, from 1.9 million in 1982, and Volkswagen recalled the most cars of any company, federal statistics showed Friday. Automakers credited the huge increase to ''bad runs'' of certain models and said they did not think it reflected a crackdown on defects by the Reagan administration.
