US names Iraq in appeal for chemical-weapons ban

Washington's chief negotiator at the United Nations Disarmament Conference said Tuesday that the use of chemical weapons by Iraq in the ''sordid and bloody'' Persian Gulf war underlined the need to ban them.

The US had concluded, on the available evidence, that Baghdad had attacked Iranian forces with such weapons, Ambassador Louis Fields told the 40-nation conference, adding that this constituted a serious breach of international law and of the 1925 Geneva protocol banning their use.
