East German emigrants flood refugee camp

Hundreds of East Germans, unexpectedly allowed to emigrate by the Communist authorities, are flooding into West Germany in the biggest exodus in more than a decade, officials said here Saturday.

Heinz Doerr, head of the central reception camp for East German refugees in Giessen, said about 100 emigrants a day had been arriving last week.

He said the influx had taken staff at the crowded camp by surprise.''At this time of year,'' he said, ''we usually have about 300 in one month.''

One new arrival, who asked not to be named, said he thought the authorities were having a final ''clear-out'' before tightening up on emigration later this year.
