Trail curb on acid rain urged by British panel

Britain should introduce an experimental curb on sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power stations in an effort to fight acid rain, a government commission said Wednesday.

The Commission on Environmental Pollution said in a report that priority should be given research into acid rain, which is caused by industrial emissions of chemicals into the atmosphere.

The report recommended a moderate increase in nuclear power and said energy use should be shifted away from fossil fuels.

But an environmental group, Friends of the Earth, described the report as too cautious and out of date. The group is campaigning for a European Community directive requiring 60 percent reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions by 1995.
