Iran claims 25-mile thrust into Iraq, deepest point yet

Iran said Thursday its Army had driven 25 miles into Iraq and captured a town where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers meet. It was the deepest penetration into Iraqi soil that Iran has claimed since the two Muslim neighbors began warring 41 months ago.

Along with its battle reports, Tehran radio repeated Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, at the head of the Gulf, through which the Western world gets two-thirds of its oil.

''Should its interests be threatened by Iraq or powers supporting it,'' the radio said, ''Iran . . . would use all its might to close it.''

Britain has hinted it may send in warships to keep the strait open, and President Reagan told a press conference at the White House Wednesday night he would not allow the strait to be closed.
