Faculty must join union to have voice: high court

The Supreme Court, in a setback to academic freedom, ruled Tuesday that college instructors who refuse to join a faculty union have no constitutional right to a voice in shaping school policies.

The 5-to-4 decision reversed a lower-court decision condemning Minnesota's community colleges for illegally excluding nonunion instructors from electing or serving on special committees appointed to meet with the administration.
